Purpose:
Vacuuming is an essential and important process before refrigerant charging in refrigeration equipment manufacturing or maintenance. That is , the vacuum pump is connected with the refrigeration system pipeline (generally the high and low pressure side is connected at the same time) to remove the non-condensable gas and water in the system pipeline.
Removing Non-Condensable Gases (NCGs):
What they are: Air (mostly Nitrogen and Oxygen) or other gases that enter the system during assembly, repair, or through leaks.
Why they are bad:
Removing Moisture (Water Vapor):
How it gets in: Humidity in the air trapped during assembly/repair, or ingress through leaks.
Why it's devastating (the biggest concern):
Acid Formation: Water reacts with refrigerant oil (especially mineral oil) and refrigerants (especially HFCs like R-134a, R-410a, R-404a) to form hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrofluoric acid (HF). This is highly corrosive.
Corrosion: Acids attack copper, brass, bearings, windings, and other metal components, leading to premature failure.
"Copper Plating": Acidic conditions can cause dissolved copper to plate out onto steel surfaces (like compressor bearings and valves), causing scoring and seizure.
Sludge and Wax Formation: Water reacts with oil to form sludge and deposits that clog capillary tubes, TXV screens, oil passages, and reduce heat transfer.
Frozen Expansion Devices: Free moisture can freeze inside TXVs or capillary tubes, causing a blockage and system failure.
Degraded Oil: Water reduces the lubricity and dielectric strength of the oil.
The Vacuuming Process:
Connection: As you stated, the vacuum pump is connected to both the high and low-pressure sides simultaneously (via service valves or access ports) using a manifold gauge set. This allows evacuation of the entire system.
Deep Vacuum: The pump pulls the system pressure down to a very deep vacuum, typically below 500 microns (µm) for most systems, often targeting 250-300 microns or lower for critical applications. This is well below the vapor pressure of water at ambient temperature.
Boiling Off Moisture: At this deep vacuum, any liquid water present boils at room temperature and is removed as vapor by the pump.
Removing Air: The vacuum pump removes the bulk of the air/NCGs quickly, but getting the last traces (and moisture) requires pulling a deep vacuum and holding it.
Why it's Essential Before Charging:
System Integrity: Ensures the refrigerant charge is pure refrigerant, not diluted or contaminated.
Performance: Guarantees the system operates at its designed efficiency and capacity.
Reliability & Longevity: Prevents acid formation, corrosion, sludge, and lubrication failures, drastically extending the system's lifespan.
Warranty: Skipping proper evacuation is a primary reason for compressor failures and often voids warranties.
Leak Check (Indirect): A system that holds a deep vacuum demonstrates it is leak-tight. A rising vacuum level indicates a leak that must be fixed before charging.
Key Considerations for Effective Vacuuming:
Pump Capacity: Use a pump large enough for the system volume.
Hose Size: Use large diameter, short hoses (1/2" or 3/8" minimum) to minimize restrictions. Avoid using manifold hoses for the final evacuation if possible; connect the pump directly or use a dedicated vacuum hose/tee.
Micron Gauge: Essential. Connect directly to the system (not the pump side) to measure the true system vacuum level. Gauges on a manifold set are not accurate enough.
Vacuum Level: Pull down to the required micron level (e.g., <500 µm, often lower).
Hold Test: Isolate the pump and monitor the micron gauge. A significant rise (e.g., > 500-1000 µm over 5-15 minutes) indicates moisture is still boiling off or a leak exists.
Triple Evacuation (for moisture): In stubborn cases, break the vacuum with dry nitrogen, let it sit to absorb moisture, then evacuate again. Repeat as needed.
In summary: Vacuuming is not just a step; it's a fundamental requirement for ensuring the purity, efficiency, reliability, and longevity of any refrigeration or air conditioning system.
Application:
Various types of air conditioners, refrigerators, water dispensers, chillers, heat pumps, etc.
